During her confirmation hearing, attorney general nominee Pam Bondi found herself squarely in Sen. Adam Schiff’s crosshairs. He wasted no time asking the question on everyone’s mind: would she acknowledge Donald Trump’s defeat in the 2020 election or stick to her old claim of massive election fraud?
Bondi insisted she’d never “play politics.” But when Schiff tried to pin her down “Was there massive fraud affecting the result of the 2020 election, yes or no?” she dodged. Schiff shot back: “You can’t answer that question?” Tensions rose, especially after he asked whether she’d advise Trump against granting pardons for people who assaulted law enforcement during the Jan. 6 insurrection.

Bondi again tiptoed around a direct answer, maintaining that pardons fall under presidential discretion. Schiff clearly wasn’t impressed. “Will you be able to review hundreds of cases on Day One?” he pressed. “Of course, you won’t.” Frustrated, Bondi fired back about his censure by House Republicans, calling his stance “reckless.”

Schiff Backs Bondi into a Corner on evidence preservation at the Department of Justice (DOJ). He demanded Bondi promise not to destroy key files gathered during Biden’s term, which led to Trump’s indictment before his re-election. Yet Bondi refused to give a firm commitment, vowing only to “follow the law.” Schiff wasn’t having it: “Why do you have difficulty promising to preserve evidence at the Department of Justice? Why is that a difficult question?”
In the end, the clash highlighted more than just political theater. It exposed genuine concerns about whether Bondi would ultimately defend the rule of law or continue propping up Trump’s discredited 2020 election myths to stay in his good graces. Her refusal to commit to preserving crucial evidence and her evasive responses—even after Schiff cornered Bondi on pardons—left observers questioning which master she would serve: the American public or the former president.
