If China or Russia hacked the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and National Institutes of Health (NIH) and shut them down, every news media would make it the top story. This last week, President Trump has frozen all travel and communications at the Department of Health and Human Services, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the National Institutes of Health, effectively shutting them down. “We’ve never seen anything like this,” one researcher told the Washington Examiner. “This is like a meteor just crashed into all of our cancer centers and research areas.”Since 1946, the CDC has wiped out malaria, polio and rabies in the U.S., fought TB and influenza, smallpox, measles and rubella. It is currently fighting AIDS, Lyme disease, lead poisoning, workplace hazards and many chronic diseases including diabetes and cancer. Crippling the work of the CDC and NIH is a direct attack on our nation’s health. All of our nation’s news media should be raising the alarm about this attack. Please use the power of your press to inform our citizens and to oppose these attacks on our nation’s health and welfare.
