Andy Kim First Asian American Senator

Andy Kim has officially made history as New Jersey’s first Asian American U.S. Senator. Governor Phil Murphy announced Kim’s appointment to the Senate following the certification of the 2024 election results.

Kim will assume office on December 8, replacing interim Senator George Helmy, who had previously stated he would step down once the results were certified. Kim will fill the seat vacated by Bob Menendez earlier this summer after his federal conviction.

“For decades, Andy Kim has shown what it means to serve,” Murphy said. “Now, he’ll bring that same passion and dedication to the Senate. It’s a big moment—not just for New Jersey, but for the entire country.”

Kim, a three-term congressman from New Jersey’s 3rd District, is no stranger to breaking barriers. As the first Korean American Senator in U.S. history, his story highlights the progress immigrant families have made. “This state gave my family a shot at the American Dream,” Kim said. “Now, I’m ready to fight for every family chasing that dream.”

With a career steeped in public service, Kim brings a wealth of experience to his new role. He has served as an advisor to a four-star general in Afghanistan, worked in the Pentagon, and held key positions on the White House National Security Council. His priorities in the Senate include addressing affordability, supporting small businesses, and ensuring military families receive the support they deserve.

Governor Murphy also took time to commend outgoing Senator Helmy. “George has been a steady voice for New Jersey during this transition,” Murphy said. “We’re grateful for his service.”

As a father of two young boys, Kim says his focus is on building a better future for families like his. “There’s no time to waste,” he said. “I’m ready to get to work.”
