Summary: U. S. Assistance to Ukraine in the Future: A Stark Possibility:

With the Biden administration in its final months, the American policy towards supporting Ukraine in its war with Russia is in a precarious situation. The approval of long-range missiles by President Biden was a significant change in the U. S. policy which allowed Ukraine to strike deeper into Russian territory. Nevertheless, the incoming Trump administration gives a clear indication of a drastic change with the focus on the rapid cessation of the war and perhaps on terms that are favorable to Russia.

This is consistent with the Trump’s ‘America First’ policy and Republican Party’s growing reluctance to provide aid to other countries. Some of the key politicians who earlier supported providing arms to Ukraine, such as Senator Marco Rubio and Congressman Mike Waltz, have changed their minds and called for reducing the American engagement. In the meantime, the Democrats who have been unanimously supporting the Biden’s strategy on Ukraine may find it hard to continue with the same enthusiasm in the new administration.

Ukraine’s allies in Europe including Germany, France, and Britain have stated their intentions to strengthen Ukraine’s defense preparedness given the expected reduced American support. For Ukraine, this change is a cause for concern on the future support, the probability of joining NATO and the ability to seek a reasonable peace settlement. As Trump promises to bring the war to an end within noaa time frame, Ukraine and its allies get ready for the next phase of the conflict.
