Trump backs US government shutdown and says it is ‘Biden’s problem’

On Friday, Mr Trump said he was happy to allow a government shutdown, which he said would be Mr Biden’s problem, rather than pass a bill that Democrats supported.

Republicans have a slim majority in the House, where the bill was debated, but some GOP representatives voted against a pared-back bill supported by Mr Trump on Thursday.

As the deadline approached, Mr Trump said: “If there is going to be a shutdown of government, let it begin now, under the Biden Administration, not after January 20th, under ‘TRUMP.’

“This is a Biden problem to solve, but if Republicans can help solve it, they will!”

Threats of government shutdown are common, and happen when departments run out of money that has already been authorised by Congress.

They typically are resolved when Republicans and Democrats compromise on a spending bill, which often has other clauses about unrelated topics that are favoured by one party.

If a shutdown takes place, the government ends all non-essential activity and furloughs its workers. The last shutdown took place for 35 days at the end of 2018.
