Trump Official Lies About New Orleans Killer, being former Vet

Trump Official Lies about attack, Corey Lewandowski, is facing backlash for attempting to defend Donald Trump’s baseless claim linking the New Orleans mass murderer to “open borders.” Despite clear evidence to the contrary, Lewandowski doubled down on the former president’s misleading rhetoric during a Sunday interview on Fox News.

Appearing on Media Buzz with Howard Kurtz, Lewandowski was questioned about Trump’s post on Truth Social, which falsely implied that an open border policy was to blame for the deadly Bourbon Street shooting. Trump had written, This is what happens when you have open borders with weak, ineffective, and virtually non-existent leadership.”

Kurtz pressed Lewandowski, pointing out that the killer was a U.S. citizen and an Army veteran. “Why, the day after we all learned that the New Orleans mass murderer was an American citizen and had served in the Army, did Donald Trump put this up on Truth Social? What has that got to do with the Bourbon Street killer?” Kurtz asked.

Instead of addressing the inaccuracy head-on, Lewandowski deflected with a speculative and deceptive response. “Well, Howie, what we know or what we seem to have known about this individual was, yes, he served in the U.S. military, but he also went overseas, I think, to the Middle East, where many think he was radicalized over there and then came through Canada before he came back into the United States,” Lewandowski claimed without evidence.

He added, “So, you know, we have to make sure that we are vigilant of checking everybody coming to this country and making sure we know where they’re coming in from. Even American citizens… making sure that we understand that we’re dealing with the mental health crisis that this person clearly had.”

Lewandowski’s remarks were a desperate attempt to shift the narrative. There’s no evidence in the FBI’s timeline to suggest Canada played any role in the tragedy, nor is there confirmation that the shooter, Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar, was radicalized overseas. Jabbar, a U.S. citizen and Army veteran, returned from Afghanistan in 2010 and reportedly dealt with untreated mental health issues following his deployment.

Notably, Kurtz did not challenge Lewandowski’s baseless assertions, allowing the false narrative to stand uncorrected.

Trump’s Truth Social post, paired with Lewandowski’s defense, highlights an ongoing strategy of stoking fear about immigration to rally support for Trump’s 2024 bid. By linking an unrelated domestic tragedy to “open borders,” the Trump campaign appears to be leaning heavily on its tried-and-true tactic of misinformation.

Critics argue that such false claims not only distract from real issues—like the mental health struggles of veterans—but also fuel xenophobia by creating unwarranted panic about immigration.

For now, the facts remain clear: the New Orleans killer was an American citizen, and any suggestion of foreign influence or border issues is nothing more than political smoke and mirrors.
